How Richmond Animal Care Found the Pit Bull?
It was a chilly December evening, with temperatures going below 30 degrees. Darkness had already set in when the Richmond Animal Care and Control received a call about a dog dumped inside a large garbage bin. The Richmond Animal care officers knew that the dog might not survive the night if they didn’t act right away. So they didn’t waste any time and immediately proceeded to the area.
When the rescue team arrived, they tried to open the doors, but they were locked. They had to go to the top of the dumpster to get to the trapped dog. When one of the responders got in to retrieve the abandoned pooch, he was shocked to discover a pregnant dog. It looked like she could really give birth any minute.
Seven puppies
The soon-to-be mama pooch, estimated to be around six to eight years old, was taken back to their facility, where they prepared a comfortable and warm bed inside a crate. The pit bull seemed grateful to be out of the cold and hungrily finished the meal that they gave her. She already felt safe.
After almost two days, she finally gave birth to seven beautiful pups. The new mama dog, which they named Mary, and her new babies were all declared healthy by the shelter’s vet.
If she hadn’t been found that fateful night, all of them might have perished.
Facing the future
To give Mary and her pups a better environment, they were all taken to a foster home. There they will continue to rest and grow. Once the dogs are around 10 weeks old, the shelter staff will start looking for their permanent homes.
The Richmond Animal Care and Control have already received applications from various people, and they are studying which ones could provide the rescue dogs the best place to live in. Hopefully, they all find responsible owners who would love them forever and never abandon them.
