In Crikvenica, Croatia, a dog race called the “Underdog Marathon” was concluded just recently. This race is always held at the end of the summer season, and it’s an excellent way for dog parents and their puppies to enjoy the beach one last time before the cooler temperatures of fall take over.
The race is composed of two parts. The first part takes place on land, where the doggo and the dog parent must run from the starting line towards the pier. Once they get to the end of the pier, that’s when the second part begins. The teams must jump into the ocean together and swim 300 feet towards the beach nearby.
A Fun Race of Dogs and Their Owners
We must admit, this race looks like it’s a lot of fun! But obviously, we must make sure that our pups can swim before joining the race, as their safety comes first. One of the first-time contestants had to pull out of the race because it turned out that her pup couldn’t swim. But with a little bit of training, we’re sure they’ll be back next year.
This year’s Underdog Marathon of Dogs And Their Owners race was won by Antonia Pirker and her fur baby Nando. The dog mom shared that she adopted her 2-year-old pooch from a dog shelter in the city. That’s why she’s very proud of him and what he has accomplished so far.
Non-athletic dogs and their owners can also have fun at the event with the ice-cream eating and the beer-drinking contests. Don’t worry; the beers being used are non-alcoholic. This year, an 11-year-old pooch named Jagoda won the ice-cream eating contest. They are proving that the whole event is for dogs of all ages.
There were only 13 teams of Dogs And Their Owners who participated in the race, according to Ruby Montanari-Knez, one of Underdog Marathon’s organizers. She explained that the pandemic caused the number to dwindle, but nevertheless, the event was successful, and what’s important is that everybody had lots of fun.
